The city of Port Huron has cut ties with the facilities management group SMG and now Port Huron Parks and Rec is taking over. The deal between the city’s rec department and the McMorran Authority was given final approval by city council Monday night during their regular meeting. Port Huron’s current Parks and Rec Director Nancy Winzer will officially take over as Interim General Manager of the facility on May 31st. Winzer is excited for the opportunity to help McMorran grow and bring more local acts to the venue. She says McMorran should bring people downtown like it used to in the past. City Manager James Freed says the popular “Rockin the River” concert series put on by parks and rec shows they can manage large events successfully. City council also approved the purchase of the former YMCA property to local developer Stevens Industries. The purchase of land and surrounding parcels, totaling almost $1 million, will still be used for condo style development; as was previously intended by the original developer, whose funding fell through. President Allen Stevens says construction could begin by the end of this year or early next spring, but first they will be marketing the property to see exactly what type of condos people are looking for. He envisions residential units similar to what you see across the river in Sarnia.
