With the recent terrorists attacks in Paris, many politicians have been critical of the resettlement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees to the U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller, U.S. Representative for Michigan's 10th district and Vice Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, has issued a statement on the House passage of the American Safety Against Foreign Enemies (or Safe Act). She says the legislation would pause the U.S. Syrian and Iraqi refugee resettlement program while the intelligence community establishes a more comprehensive vetting and certification process for each U.S.-bound refugee. The legislation also creates an additional layer of protection by requiring the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General to independently assess the refugee approvals, making sure that high-risk individuals do not slip through the cracks. President Obama has said he plans to veto the bill.
