Deadly disease reported among area dogs

St. Clair County Animal Control is recommending Blue Water Area pet owners have their dogs vaccinated against Canine Parvo-virus after an uptick in local cases of the disease. So far 11 cases of the virus have been identified in dead dogs from the Port Huron and St. Clair area. Parvo causes severe gastrointestinal illness and is easily spread, often before symptoms emerge. Symptoms include severe diarrhea, not eating or drinking, fever, vomiting, or weakness. Animal Control Director Melissa Miller suggests avoiding doggie daycare’s, boarding facilities, dog parks and other places where contact with unvaccinated dogs can occur.
