Local authorities are urging residents and businesses to be wary of a telephone scam in which con artists claim to be with DTE Energy. According to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, a Port Huron Township business was contacted by phone this weekend by an individual stating they were behind on their electricity payments. The scammer instructed the business owner to provide a credit card number over the phone or else their power would be shut off. According to DTE Energy, the utility does not collect payments via credit card over the phone and shutoff notices are delivered via mail only. The scammer’s phone number started with 833, and DTE says all communication on the phone will only come from the utility’s 800-477-4747 number. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s office says those who may have any questions about this scam or those who may have received a similar phone call should contact DTE energy directly.
