The Port Huron Area School District will be moving forward with the closure of Kimball Elementary School and consolidation of classes at Roosevelt Elementary School. In a special session meeting last night, board of education members unanimously passed a plan put forward by Superintendent Jamie Cain, reducing the district’s elementary schools from ten to nine. According to the Superintendent, elementary aged enrollment has declined by nearly 900 students over the past several years, telling WPHM closing a school isn’t a decision he takes lightly. “People need a chance to process this and heal,” said Cain. “We’re going to be standing with them to help make this transition as easy as possible… it’s a very difficult thing that we never wanted to do, but felt that we had to do.” The changes will take effect in the 2019-2020 school year. Students currently attending Kimball Elementary will have the options to move to Michigamme, Indian Woods, or the Cleveland-Wilson academy. The last Port Huron Area School District building to close was Lakeport Elementary in 2013.
