Port Huron City Manager James Freed holding a “Hot Dogs and Hot Topics” question and answer session, at the Connor Street Pub on Friday afternoon. One of the topics addressed was the need for a grocery store in the South Park neighborhood, which has become a food desert since the River District Supermarket burned in 2013. Freed says the wheels are in motion and the city is working to get federal grants to help bring fresh food to the south side. Freed also explained why he nearly doubled the annual rental inspection fee in the City of Port Huron, with Freed saying the city is being much more thorough with it’s rental inspections. For the most part, Freed commends landlords in the city, however he says a few bad “slum lords” have prompted the city to expand it’s inspections.
