Lead poisoning awareness

16871707

This week is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and the St. Clair County Health Department is encouraging residents to be aware of the dangers of lead poisoning. Nearly 100 children in St. Clair County last year tested positive for elevated lead levels. Major sources of lead poisoning in children include lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust in deteriorating buildings. Children can also be exposed to lead from contaminated drinking water, take-home exposures from a workplace, and lead in soil. Health effects of lead posioning include behavior and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems and agressive behavior.  Parents can reduce a child's exposure to lead in many ways, first: If you believe your child might be exposed to lead, get them tested. Lead testing can be done by a simple finger poke at many doctors offices and at the St. Clair County Health Department. Also, if you live in a home that was built before 1978, you might want to consider getting your home tested.
