Relatively short meeting Monday night for the Port Huron School Board. The board approved the district's updated High School Athletic Handbook for 2015-16. Along with the new handbook area schools now have the ability to judge the academic eligibility of athletes in real-time using the district's "Skyward" software. Gifts and donations were also accepted from the community during the meeting, including a $14,000 donation for a new playground at Crull elementary. A $1,000 donation was also accepted for Port Huron Northerns 'Fund Our Floor' campaign. The school has 9 committed sponsors donating $10,000 a piece. The deadline to help them reach their $120,000 goal is October 2nd , the kids will be putting on a walk-a-thon this Saturday at 9:00am at Port Huron Northern. The board also recognized several students and staff members during the meeting. Cameron Sparshu, a 6th grader at Fort Gratiot middle school, was honored for winning first place at the state level of the PTA Reflections contest for her essay titled "My World Wish". Hannah Jones, a senior at Port Huron Northern, was also honored. In May she was announced as the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Michigan. Two educators were also recognized. Mr. Ryan Mullins and Mrs. Tracey Hopp were honored for their efforts during Victory Day on August 15th, were children with special needs were provided with a full "game day experience" at Memorial Stadium.
