The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that left one person dead and several others hurt during a hay wagon ride in Kimball Township.
Deputies were called just before 7:30 Saturday night to Smiths Creek Road west of Burns Road. Investigators say a 79-year-old man was driving a tractor pulling a hay wagon with at least five passengers when it was hit from behind by a Buick Regal driven by a 44-year-old Kimball Township man.
The Sheriff’s Office says the tractor did not appear to have proper rear lighting or a slow-moving vehicle emblem at the time of the crash.
All involved were taken to local hospitals. An 85-year-old woman riding on the wagon was pronounced dead, and the tractor driver was last known to be in critical condition. The other passengers were treated for injuries ranging from minor to severe. The driver of the Buick also suffered minor injuries.
The Sheriff Department’s Accident Investigation Team is continuing to look into the crash.
