Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County is getting a major upgrade. During a visit earlier this week, coinciding with his first 100 days in office, President Donald Trump announced that approximately 20 F-15EX fighter jets will be based at Selfridge—a move Michigan leaders say will secure the future of the base for decades. Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined the president for the announcement and spoke with WPHM’s Paul Miller about the long bipartisan effort it took to secure the new mission. Whitmer said the A-10 fighters currently stationed at Selfridge are being retired, and there were real concerns the base could be left without a replacement mission. She emphasized the importance of the announcement, noting that Selfridge supports tens of thousands of jobs and drives hundreds of millions of dollars in annual economic activity across Michigan. The new fighter mission comes in addition to the previously announced KC-46A refueling aircraft that will also be stationed at Selfridge, signaling a long-term federal commitment to the base.
Whitmer also told WPHM she’s working with the Trump administration on other issues affecting Michigan, including FEMA relief for ice storm recovery and trade policy with Canada. She says ongoing tariff disputes are hurting tourism and costing jobs on both sides of the border.
