31-year-old Dereck Hockin of Lapeer was reportedly heading west on I-69 near Lake Nepessing Road Wednesday around 5pm, when his vehicle began drifting across the median and into oncoming traffic. Hockin’s vehicle crashed head on into an SUV driven by a 22-year-old woman, also from Lapeer. Both drivers were the only two individuals involved in the crash. The woman was transported to an area hospital where she was last known to be in stable condition. Hockin however was pronounced deceased at the scene. Neither alcohol nor excess speeds are believed to have played a role in the crash. Hockin may have had a medical condition though that is currently being explored as a potential contributing factor. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating.
