Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is opening up $350,000 additional appointments at branch offices across Michigan. During a press conference yesterday, she announced that half of the appointments will be available to schedule online in advance, and the other half will be “next day” appointments made available at 8am and noon each weekday. The new appointments were added by changing the time allotted for each appointment from 20 minutes to 10 minutes each, effectively doubling the number of available time slots. Benson also called on the legislature to approve$25 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding so they could add more hours and staff to deal with a backlog caused by the pandemic. Benson says at some Michigan locations, you will be able also walk up to a branch office to see if an appointment is available from a greeter. If not, that greeter will help you schedule a future appointment. She adds that priority in scheduling these additional appointments will be given to those with handicap license plates and placards that are up for renewal.
