IRS impersonator scam makes a return

St. Clair County residents may find someone calling their house claiming to be the IRS, but it most likely is a scam that;s been making it’s way across the nation. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be aware of an IRS scam, which has targeted several people in St. Clair County. Sheriff Tim Donnellon says he’s received dozens of complaints of a person calling residents homes demanding payment for back taxes. Victims are threatened with arrest, deportation or loss of business or drivers license if they fail to make an immediate payment, which is told can only be made by prepaid debit card or wire transfer. Victims may also be told they have a refund available to try and trick them out of personal information. Sheriff Donnellon says anyone who has been a victim of this scam should contact the IRS at: 1-800-366-4484.
