The United Way of St. Clair County is preparing to move into a new home while launching a new approach to helping local residents.

After nearly seven decades at its Military Street office in downtown Port Huron, the organization is relocating to the Blue Water Community Action campus at 3403 Lapeer Road, Suite B-201.

Executive Director Sharon Wilton says the organization is also introducing a new service model, expanding the United Way’s focus on direct assistance, year-round community outreach and connecting residents with essential services to help them overcome short-term financial hardships.

Wilton says about 40% of St. Clair County residents fall into what’s known as the ALICE population—households that are working but still struggle to afford basic necessities or recover from unexpected financial setbacks.

The United Way office will be closed September 3 through September 9 while staff complete the move. During that time, residents needing immediate assistance are encouraged to call 2-1-1. An online intake form can also be submitted through the United Way’s website, and staff say requests should be answered within 24 hours.

The United Way will officially introduce its new service model during a kickoff event from 5 to 7 p.m. October 1 at the Wrigley Center in Port Huron. The event will include a brief presentation about the organization’s future direction, along with food, games and opportunities to learn more about services.
