The Port Huron Area School District will not be mandating masks for students and staff when they return for in person learning in two weeks time. That decision coming from the Port Huron Area School District Board of Education this week. Superintendent Theo Kerhoulas tells WPHM while the masking issue will be optional, the district will follow all state and local mandates regarding masks if they are issued.

“At this point we’re encouraging it and making masks available for all,” said Kerhoulas. “We just had summer school under the same conditions as we’re under right now with (masks) optional… and we got through that.”

Kerhoulas also says there will be no mandate for Port Huron Area School District Employees to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and adds that over 80% of staff has received the shot. Staffing continues to be a struggle at area school districts. Superintendent Theo Kerhoulas says in Port Huron they’ve been able to fill teaching vacancies but still have various support staff openings at district buildings. Those open positions can be viewed by visiting the district’s website at www.phasd.us.
