St. Clair County has named Justin Westmiller the new head of the Departmnet of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Westmiller is a native of the St. Clair area and served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a public information officer. Speaking to WPHM’s Paul Miller yesterday morning, Westmiller described the role of the emergency manager as a coordinator of public services to help residents of the county during times of need. He adds that the St. Clair County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is ready to respond to severe weather, toxic material releases, and other hazardous events that may jeopardize the safety of area residents. For example, Westmiller says his office is closely monitoring the ongoing ice jams and flooding issue in southern St. Clair County and says county agencies are ready to respond if flooding returns. He was named to the position earlier this month, with outgoing Emergency Manager Jeff Friedland set to retire later this week.
