Research from Michigan State University shows that Michigan residents are worried about a Line 5 spill into the Mackinac Straits. Even more are concerned about a rupture during winter’s icy conditions. Sixty percent of Michigan adults questioned indicated that they were aware of Line 5 that carries 540,000 barrels per day of light crude oil and liquid natural gas beneath the Straits of Mackinac. 44 percent of them were extremely concerned about a spill. Only six percent reported no concern at all. Line five runs from Superior, Wisconsin to Sarnia, Ontario and also passes underneath the St. Clair River.
