A program to help prevent opiod related deaths will be launched next week by the St. Clair County Health Department. Julie Walding, Public Health Nurse for the health department tells us the free program distributes confidential Naloxone rescue kits for individuals at risk for opiod overdose, or for those who have contact with opiod using individuals. Naloxone is a medication used to reverse the effects of opiods, especially in the case of an overdose. Walding says the program isn’t just for those that use opiods illegally either, it’s also available for individuals who are taking there medications as directed by their physician. Walding notes the problem with opiod overdose is that it suppresses breathing, which typically is what leads to death. Communities implementing these types of programs have seen a dramatic decrease in overdose rates. The program is free and confidential and will take place on the second Monday of each month, starting next week from 5:00-6:00pm, at the St. Clair County Health Department. Registration is preferred, however, walk-ins will be available on a limited basis. To register for training or for more information call: 810-987-5300.
