Adoptive families will be honored at courts around the state as part of Michigan Adoption Day. Today, dozens of adoptions are being finalized in special ceremonies as part of the yearly celebration. Macomb County Circuit Court Judge David Viviano explains the events highlight the need to find permanent families for waiting foster children, while paying gratitude to adoptive families. Viviano says there are about 13,000 children in Michigan's foster care system, and nearly 2,400 awaiting adoption. According to Justice Viviano, about 1,700 children are adopted in Michigan each year, and the courts play a vital role in the process. He adds, Adoption Day events provide those in the judicial system an opportunity to pause and reflect on the importance of their work. Michigan Adoption Day is held annually on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. This year's theme is "Giving Thanks for Families."
