Elections and issues

It's election day today and here in the Blue Water area only a handful of governmental units have issues or candidates on the ballot. In Marysville the question of whether or not to move city hall to a new location that would combine museum, recreation, and municipal services. Mayor Dan Damman says under the plan there would be no additional cost to tax payers. Marysville voters will also choose four out of five candidates vying for city council. For the Township at issue is the need for continued police protection at a cost that Fort Gratiot Supervisor Jorja Baldwin says has been increasing. She says costs though to run a separate police department is still not a viable option. In St. Clair the question concerns more funding for road work. Elsewhere voters in the City of St. Clair decide on a road millage and Cottreville Township voters decide on whether they want a new Supervisor and Clerk. Polls are open today until 8pm. There is also an election today in the city of Yale but it will largely be a formality thanks to a pair of separate filings and little competition. The Mayor, Clerk, and Treasurer positions were decided during the August Primary and with no further candidates seeking office, an independent and write-in rounded out the field of council members. Anthony Hackett and Karen Schneck were independents winning separate seats while write-in candidate Scott Ferguson will also be joining incumbent Scott Gill in serving City Council. Richard Bush will be the new mayor as James Cronin retires from the position.
