Protection for service dogs

Legislation is moving through the Michigan legislature designed to help disabled veterans with service dogs avoid problems when entering a business. State Representative Tom Barrett says the bills aim to provide disabled vets with identification, tags and a patch for their dog’s vest. He says the dogs help vets that have invisible wounds, like post-traumatic stress or traumatic brain injury, and this will make it easier for business owners to identify the dogs as service animals. The bills also create penalties for people who misrepresent their dogs as a service animal. The legislation passed a Senate committee.
