Port Huron Schools held the first of two community engagement sessions last night. The meeting, held at Port Huron High School, saw many in attendance. Audience members were given questionnaires to judge their response to recommendations by the district's steering committee. The meeting focused on needed repairs and upgrades to school buildings, as well as enhancing the school curriculum. McCarthy & Smith construction firm, who has worked with the district in the past, spoke during the meeting. The firm toured school faculties and prepared a detailed report specifying many areas that need to be addressed, such as: HVAC systems, bathrooms, ceilings, and floors. The construction company's assessment report estimated repairs at $67 million. Representatives from TMP Architectures also spoke during the meeting an discussed several ways area schools could be relevant in the 21st century. After the meetings have commenced, the schools steering committee: Building Tomorrow, Today–will take recommendations to the board in November and voters could see bond proposals on the May ballot next year. The next community engagement session takes place at the end of October on the 29th, at Port Huron Northern High School.
