LAYOFFS APPROVED AT SPECIAL SCHOOL MEETING

Over 60 teachers are to be laid off, in the Port Huron Area School District, for the next school year.  That's the number revealed Wednesday afternoon, during a special session for the school's Board of Education.  A packed meeting room, at the McKinley building, saw many teachers and parents railing against the number and the state mandated evaluation tool the board approved to use last year.  Board President, Jeff Stout, says he understands the concerns of parents and students but says there was only so much money available. Last year saw 23 teachers laid off, with most eventually called back.  Stout says, some of the 60 could be called back if grant money can be found or, if some retire.  He says, the district continues to struggle with higher costs and lower student counts and has closed some buildings because of the loss.
