Tips for Surviving St. Patrick's Day!

Go easy on the suds: A 12-ounce beer typically contains 150 to 200 calories. It would take 20 minutes of Irish dancing to burn off the 110 calories in a bottle of Bud Light, according to SparkPeople.com. It would take 40 minutes of kissing the Blarney Stone to work off the calories in a 153-calorie bottle of Harp Lager, and 43 minutes playing bagpipes to work off a bottle of Murphy's Irish Red (171 calories).

Designate a driver: Two-fifths of all deaths in crashes between 2006 and 2010 involved a drunken driver during St. Patrick's Day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. And from 2008 to 2012, drunken driving was responsible for 268 deaths in the United States on St. Patrick's Day.

Beware traditional cuisine: Corned beef and cabbage, a meal traditionally consumed on St. Patrick's Day, can contain more than 1,000 mg of sodium in one serving. That's nearly the entire daily limit, according to the American Cancer Society. And a large 22-ounce McDonald's McCafe Shamrock Shake, an American tradition this time of year, has 820 calories and 23 grams of fat.

Skip the fake green: The amount of food coloring contained in one green beer likely isn't enough to make you sick, but food coloring has been linked in studies to cancer and headaches, so why not avoid it whenever possible?

Keep your lips to yourself: Dare to obey the “Kiss me, I'm Irish” buttons worn by strangers in your neighborhood Irish pub and you'll put yourself at risk for herpes.
