Port Huron based SEMCO Energy says they have enough gas to go around, even though other utilities across the state are asking customers to dial back their thermostats. Tim Lubbers, director of business development for SEMCO, says the utility was not affected by a compressor issue at Consumers Energy’s Macomb County compressor station. An explosion on Wednesday at the Consumers facility prompted Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to alert all state residents to ration their gas usage. Speaking to WPHM, Lubbers says, “SEMCO wasn’t aware that the alert was going out and right now our system is fine, and we expect it to be fine.” SEMCO provides natural gas to customers in the Thumb area, Southwest Michigan, and across the Upper Peninsula.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Governor Whitmer and the heads of natural gas utility providers are urging customers to turn down their thermostats in order to cut down on demand for natural gas. Consumers CEO Patti Poppe made the request just hours after an explosion and fire at a natural gas compressor station in Macomb County. No injuries were reported. An alert about the Governor’s plea went out on many cell phones late last night, including some SEMCO Energy customers in the local area.
