City taps brakes on park hours ordinance

Port Huron city officials say an ordinance that council was expected to take action on Monday will be tabled until the new year. The ordinance would set a 9:00 p.m. closing time for all city parks, beaches, and pools. City Manager James Freed says after talking to council, residents, and staff, he is requesting more time to receive community input. Freed says, “After the first reading, it appears we need to work more on this language.” The ordinance, as currently written, would close recreation facilities an hour earlier and allow police to remove individuals who may be causing a disturbance.

An ordinance being considered by Port Huron City Council would scale back the number of hours city parks and pools are open. The ordinance, which will have a second reading in front of council on Monday, would close all city parks at 9:00 p.m. Port Huron Police Chief Joseph Platzer tells WPHM the ordinance would create consistency in enforcement. Platzer says the new ordinance would give police the authority to remove individuals at the department’s discretion. A second reading will be held during this Monday night’s regular session meeting of Port Huron City Council.
