Busy day Thursday for St. Clair County Commissioners. After spending most of the selecting the county’s next administrator, they met for their monthly committee meetings. County Surveyor Stephen Bruen submitted a letter of resignation to the board. He’ll be officially resigning on October 31st. But, as it’s an election year for the position commissioners have decided to recommend Chuck Koob, the only candidate running for the job, to fill-in in the interim.  In other business  it looks like the county park in Fort Gratiot township will be seeing some work soon. Mark Brochu the county’s Parks and Rec Director spoke during the Environmental/ Public Works Committee concerning a project to truck in beach sand to the park, which has seen severe erosion over the past few years. Brochu says the project should begin in the next couple of weeks. During the Ways and Means Committee meeting the board renewed an employment agreement with the county’s Health Officer/ Medical Director. Dr. Annette Mercatante has served the county in this dual capacity since 2011.  St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon also gave commissioners an overview of the Sheriff’s Office Animal Control division. Recent upgrades to the county’s animal shelter have been made possible by the trust fund of Rose Couzens. Along with a new laboratory and surgical suite, improvements were also made to the shelter’s ventilation system. The cats at the shelter have also been moved to the front area. Sheriff Donnellon says that many people who come in for a dog end up leaving with a cat.
