Many county officials were in attendance Thursday night for the St. Clair County Board of Commissioners committee meetings. A few addressed the board, speaking in support of Millage renewals, which were on the boards agenda, one of them concerns county roads. Commission Chair Jeff Bohm says the millage renewal is mainly used to secure federal matching aid. Without the millage dozens of road projects throughout our county would otherwise have been shelved. The millage renewal for county parks and recreation was also discussed Thursday night. Bohm notes that when he first got on the board 12 years ago, the county only had Goodells County Park. Over the years the county has been able to add to it’s park system, such as the county park in Fort Gratiot. Bohm says he believes the parks add to the quality of life in St. Clair County. Also during the Public Safety Committe meeting, commissioners heard from Marine Divison Lieutenant Paul Reid regarding the counties Marine Safety Grant Application. The annual grant has reduced over time, causing the Marine Division to reduce their hours of patrol. Chair Jeff Bohm, who is an avid boater, says although he still feels safe on the water with reduced patrols, this grant is still important for routine enforcement.. Lt. Reed suggested that commissioners discuss the funding issue with state officials, noting that boat registration, which supports marine patrol funding, is far lower than vehicle registration fees. Commissioners said they would bring up the issue at their next legislative luncheon.
